Place & Being brings together the work of 15 photographers based in Mexico and the United Kingdom. Using the medium of photography, a visual dialogue has been created which aims to promote cultural diversity between these two nations. The project brings together ideas concerned with the way individuals develop and engage with their environment.
The project demonstrates a range of different photographic approaches. Often highly personal, selected work includes an exploration of the mysteries of science and space, and an analysis of the dynamics between subjects, objects and economies. The contrast between these visual discourses invites the viewer to engage in imaginary dialogues.
This cultural and artistic exchange operates as a way of encouraging links between institutions, the public at large and between nations. The aim is to build bridges which enhance both artists’ and the viewer’s perception of photography.
Photographers involved
Adam Wiseman (Mexico). He worked as a freelance photographer in New York and as a fine art printer for Magnum. Wiseman has been editor for magazines such as Vuelo, D.F. - by Travesías, Fahrenheit and National Geographic (Spanish Edition). He has exhibited his work in Switzerland, Japan, USA, Spain and Mexico. In addition, one of his works is permanently housed in the Smithsonian Institute's collection in Washington (USA). He has participated in competitions and international exhibitions such as at theVenice Biennale (2006). In 2009 he won 3rd place in the competition ElMexico de los Mexicanos (Mexico).

Adam Wiseman (México). Trabajó como fotógrafo independiente en Nueva York y como impresor fino para la agencia Magnum y ha sido editor fotográfico de las revistas Vuelo, D.F. por Travesías, Fahrenheit y National Geographic en Español. Christopher Nunn (Reino Unido). Se graduó como Licenciado en Fotografía del Bradford College en 2004 y fue seleccionado a través de una convocatoria a nivel nacional para participar en la exposición colectiva Lost in Transit organizada por Redeye: The Photoraphy Netwok que sellevó a cabo en la Impressions Gallery de Bradford y más tarde en la Vyner Street Gallery situada en Londres, durante el Festival de Fotografía Photomonth. Ha participado en diversos concursos fotográficos y en 2010 su trabajo fue seleccionado para formar parte de la exposición de verano Summer Show de la revista Foto8 en HOST Gallery de Londres. Dulce Pinzon (Mexico). Her work has been exhibited, published and collected internationally. In 2001 some of her photos were used for the Spanish edition book cover of Howard Zinn’s A People's History of the United States. In 2002 she was awarded the prestigious Mexican grant, Jovenes Creadores. In 2004 she won first prize in the two-dimensional category at The 4th Encounter of Contemporary Art in Puebla. She won the first prize at the XII Photography Biennial of the Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City in 2006 whilst being an intern at The New York Foundation for The Arts. Subsequently, in 2009, she was awarded a grant from the Ford Foundation. In 2011, she took part at the Les Rencontres D’Arles Photographie in France and also in PhotoIreland Festival in Dublin and in Más Allá de la Reportería Fotográfica in Bogotá, Colombia.

Dulce Pinzón (México). Su trabajo ha sido expuesto, publicado y coleccionado internacionalmente. En 2001 algunas de sus fotos fueron utilizadas para la portada de la edición en español del libro A People’s History of the United States, de Howard Zinn. Ernesto Rios (Mexico). He is currently a PhD candidate at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.Rios has presented his work in 17 solo exhibitions in Mexico, notably at theCentro de la Imagen and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Morelia, abroad at the Perth Centre for Photography in Australia, and at La Fototeca de Cubain La Havana. He has also participated in more than 60 group exhibitions across the globe. His pictures have been included in 18 books and he has published work at several international magazines such as National Geographic, Fortune, Elle and Geo Mundo, among many others.

Ernesto Ríos (México). Actualmente estudia un doctorado en Artes Visuales en el Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Australia).
Ríos ha mostrado su trabajo en 17 exposiciones individuales en México, en el Centro de la Imagen y el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Morelia por mencionar algunos, y en el extranjero en el Perth Centre for Photography en Australia y la Fototeca de Cuba en la Havana entre otros. Jo Phipps (United Kingdom). She studied a BA in Film in 1993 and in 2011 she completed a Post Graduate year in Photography at Central St. Martins. In early 2012 she started an MA in Photography at London College of Communication. In Phipps’s photographic practice, she is fascinated by the possibilities for transformation on an individual level and also by issues of identity and representation across private and public realms.

Juan Antonio Sánchez Rull (Mexico). He has participated in both group and solo exhibitions. Sanchez Rull was short-listed for the Séptima Bienal de Fotografía organised by Centro de la Imagen in Mexico and for the XV Encuentro Nacional Arte Joven del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Carrillo Gil. His images have been published in the magazines Luna Córnea and Curare.
In 2009 he was awarded with the ‘Best Artist Book’ prize at the Feria de libros de Artista during Fotoseptiembre festival. As a result, CONACULTA and Centro de la Imagen published his book entitled JS in 2010. He also participated in the forum Tercera Edición at the Museo Carrillo Gil with his book Casa Darwin. In April 2011 his work was presented in the exhibition Orbe at the MUCA Roma in Mexico City.

Pablo Lopez Luz (Mexico). He has exhibited his work in Mexico and in the United States, Spain, France, Italy, Brazil, Japan and Russia. His first book has been published by Toluca Editions in collaboration with Editorial RM in early 2011.
He obtained the Velázquez Grant (2005 - 2006), from the Cultural Ministry of Spain; the Young Artists Fellowship from the FONCA (Mexico, 2007-2008),The Scholarship Program Bancomer MACG Arte Actual (2009 - 2010) and he was awarded for the second time the Young Creators Grant 2011-2012.

Pablo Allison (Mexico/United Kingdom). Completed his BA in Documentary Photography and Photojournalism between the
University of the Arts, London (LCC) and

Newport College of Art and Design. Control, division, contrast and displacement are ideas that generally feature throughout Allison’s practice as an artist.
His work has been presented at Photomonth in London, the Biennial Photography Festival LOOK11 in Liverpool and elsewhere in the United Kingdom. He was selected in 2010 to take part in Light Box, a nine-month intensive workshop organized by Redeye: The Photography Network under the guidance of renowned British publisher Dewi Lewis. This culminated in an exhibition entitled Control supported by the Arts Council, Redeye andLook11. In 2011 he was invited by the Sociedad Dokins to take part in the exhibition Intersticios Urbanos held at the Centro Cultural de España in Mexico. He is a founding member of Centrepoint Collective since its formation in 2009. He currently lives and works in the United Kingdom.

Petra Stridfeldt (Sweden). She is a UK-based photographer who started her photographic career in Sweden. She completed a BA Hons Degree in Photography at The Liverpool Moore University in the UK. She is particularly interested in conceptual art photography and her work often stages images and sculptures that touch upon humans’ denial of over-consumption and its effects on the environment. She shows her work often in a tragicomic way where the viewer is thrown between different feelings. Her work can inspire words such as tranquillity, minimalism and space. Stridfeldt’s work has been exhibited widely in the UK.

Petra Stridfeldt (Suecia). Fotógrafa afincada en el Reino Unido que empezó su carrera en Suecia y estudió la Licenciatura de Fotografía en The Liverpool Moores University en Inglaterra. Está especialmente interesada en la fotografía artística conceptual y su trabajo muestra frecuentemente imágenes y esculturas que versan sobre la negación del exceso de consumo por parte del ser humano y sus efectos sobre el medio ambiente. Roxana Allison (México / Reino Unido). Estudió la Licenciatura en Artes Visuales en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, graduándose en 2006. Susana Sanroman (Spain). Originally from Galicia, Spain, Sanroman’s background is in Business as well as in Fine Art Photography. She graduated from
London College of Communications in 2008. Since then, she has been involved in a number of exhibitions, presenting her own work as well as organizing group exhibitions. In October 2008 she was shortlisted for the
Generacion 2008, and one year later she published the essay
Women looking at Women: The Female Gaze. Earlier this year she was short-listed at the
Fonacort Santander Photography Festival with her work
Memorabilia.
She is a co-founder and a current member of Artcrunch (a curatorial partnership) and Centrepoint Collective. She is also involved with award winning New Opera Hero Project. She currently lives and works in London.

Susana Sanromán (España). Originaria de Galicia. Sanromán tiene una formación tanto en el sector empresarial como artística. En el 2008 se graduó en fotografía por el London College of Communications. Desde entonces ha participado en numerosas exposiciones tanto como artista como curadora de arte. En octubre del 2008 fue seleccionada finalista de Generación 2008 Caja Madrid, y un año más tarde publicó su primer ensayo fotográfico ‘Women looking at Women: The Female Gaze’. A principios de 2011 fue finalista con Memorabilia en el certamen de fotografía de Foconorte Santander.
Es cofundadora y miembro activo de Artcrunch (un colectivo de curaduría de arte) y de Centrepoint Collective. Asimismo participa en el proyecto New Opera Hero, galardonado con varios premios. Sanromán actualmente vive y trabaja en Londres (Inglaterra).

Tom Hunter (United Kingdom). He graduated from the
London College of Printing with a BA First Class Honours (1994) and completed his MA at the
Royal College of Art, London (1997). In 1998 he was awarded the
JohnKobal Photographic Portrait Award. In 2006 he was the first artist to present a photography exhibition at the
National Gallery in London.
His work often explores the lives and stories of the people in his neighbourhood (Hackney, East London). He has exhibited both nationally and internationally, in solo and group shows and is also a Senior Research Fellow for The London College of Communication, University of the Arts, London. He was recently awarded with an Honorary Doctorate of the Arts from the University of East London. He currently lives and works in London.

Tom Hunter (Reino Unido). Culminó sus estudios fotográficos en 1994 en el London College of Printing (LCP). En 1997 estudió una Maestría en el Royal College of Art (RCA) en Londres. Al año siguiente fue galardonado con el premio Kobal Photographic Portrait Award y en 2006 se convirtió en el primer artista en presentar una exposición fotográfica en la National Gallery de Londres.

Santiago Carrion (Spain). He graduated in Communication Studies at theUnivesidad Cardenal Herrera CEU San Pablo. After some years working in the banking industry, Carrion commenced a period of reflection that took him to the United Kingdom to study a Foundation Degree in Photojournalism at the University of the Arts, London College of Communication. Soon after, he completed a BA (Hons) in Photography and has recently graduated from his MA in Documentary Photography at the same university. He has exhibited his work in France and the UK and is currently working on a photographic book about the so-called ‘stolen babies’ of the recent history of Spain. He is also a member of Centrepoint Collective.

Santiago Carrión (España). Estudió en su Valencia natal la Licenciatura en Ciencias de la Información en la Universidad Cardenal Herrera CEU San Pablo. Después de trabajar durante varios años dentro del sector bancario, inició un periodo de reflexión que culminó con su partida al Reino Unido donde estudió una Licenciatura en Fotoperiodismo en la University of the Arts, London College of Communication y también una Licenciatura en Fotografía. Recientemente terminó una Maestría en Fotografía Documental en ésa misma universidad. Ha realizado exposiciones de su obra fotográfica en Francia y el Reino Unido. Actualmente trabaja en un libró de fotografía sobre los llamados ‘niños robados’ en España y es miembro de Centrepoint Collective.
